EU Cross-Border Directive

Why This Matters

Irish hospital waiting lists are at record highs, leaving patients in pain or at risk while waiting months sometimes years for surgery.

What many people don’t realize is that support already exists to help patients access care abroad. Through the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive and the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF), Irish patients may be able to receive treatment overseas and have their costs reimbursed or funded by the HSE.

At Spain EU Medical, we don’t just tell you about these options, we do the hard work of making them happen for you.

What it means for you
As an Irish patient, you have the right under EU law to receive healthcare in another EU/EEA country. After your treatment abroad, you may be reimbursed by the HSE (up to the Irish cost of that treatment).

How we help

Most patients find the process complicated and overwhelming. That’s where we step in.

We take care of:

  • Checking if your treatment qualifies.

  • Handling HSE forms and approvals (where needed).

  • Matching you with accredited hospitals in Spain, Turkey, and other EU countries.

  • Arranging your travel and treatment.

  • Guiding you through the reimbursement process.

National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF)

What it means for you

The NTPF is an Irish government initiative that funds treatment for patients who have been waiting too long in the public system. Many procedures we facilitate hip and knee replacements, general surgeries, diagnostic tests are supported by the NTPF.
Please note: Travel and accommodation expenses are not included in HSE refunds and will need to be arranged separately.

How we help

We ensure that qualifying patients don’t miss out because of confusing forms or unclear steps.

Our team helps you:

  • Understand which treatments are covered.

  • Apply for NTPF funding correctly.

  • Secure treatment in one of our trusted international partner hospitals.

  • Receive care much sooner than you would in Ireland.
